Summer Learning Journey - Week one - Activity 3

The charity I choose was the SPCA. The SPCA takes care of animals who are hurt, sick, abused or abandoned. The SPCA helps take care and protect 40,000 animals each year! (That is a crazy amount of animals.) The SPCA finds abandoned animals and take care of them and finds a new home for each and every one of them, but first, the SPCA has to fix up the animal and see if it is hurt or sick or has been abused. The SPCA does a wonderful job at helping the animals.

By Katelyn.M

PS: I hope all of the animals all have an awesome home now.

Questions:
Do you like animals?
Do you have an animal?
Do you want an animal? (If you don't have one.)

Summarising - The Force

WALT: summarise
My group and I had to read the story called The Force. Then after we read the story we had to summarise. Summarise means that when you read a story, you have to retell the story (in your own words) with the only important parts. What I think that was challenging was to learn how to summarise. For this activity, I liked to read the book because I like reading and because I am learning new things. (Like summarising.) I hope you like my blog post. By Katelyn.M

Film festival Refection

What is the film festival? The film festival is when you can make a film. Your film can then go into the draw to be shown at the regent theatre. You can see other peoples films too. It is lots of fun. Today we went to the regent theatre for the film festival. My favourite film was the one made by Manu at our school because they did the film on our school song.

This is my groups wevideo.

Adventure story (what it is)

Miss Farr put us in groups of three and we had to work together to explain what an adventure story is.
The thing I enjoyed about this activity was working together.
The thing what was challenging was to think what makes a good adventure story, why people like them, what adventure storeys I know and what might good writers do.

Māori: Reka ngā kapapa huarākau. Anei ngā tohutohu. Tuatahi, horoia ngā kerepe. Tuarua, tīhoretia ngā huakiwi... ....ngā panana,me ngā ārani. Tuatoru, tapahia ngā huarākau kia iti. Tuawhā, werohia ngāhuarakau me ngā rare kōpungapunga. Tino reka ngā kapapa.

English: Fruit kebabs are delicious. This is how you make them. First, wash the grapes. Second, peel the apples, kiwifruit.... ... bananas, and oranges. Third, cut the fruit into small pieces. Fourth, put the fruit and the marshmallows on the sticks. The kababs are really delicious.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP)

Last week we had to research The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and this week we had to put that information in a newsletter. I liked this because I  learnt what The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is and what it does to the environment.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch which is GPGP. The GPGP is estimated surface of 1.6 million square kilometres, that's like three times of France. The GPGP is halfway between Hawaii and California. The GPGP was only discovered in 1993. GPGP is full of waste/rubbish.

What does it do to animals?
Have you ever thought about what the plastic does to the animals? When the plastic goes into the ocean, the animals think it is food. Turtles think that plastic bag a jellyfish so they eat it then they get sick and sadly die.

What is in the GPGP?
In the GPGP there is soo much plastic in it. It has big and little pieces of plastic. Because of all the plastic it is forming an island.

How to make beeswax wraps

By Katelyn.M and Meka.W
Do you know that every day you use glad wrap, do you know how to fix it. Will we do, use beeswax wraps. If you have a square beeswax wraps you can put it on a circle thing too because you can put a rubber band around the beeswax wraps.

To make beeswax wraps you need:
Fabric any that you like.
Special scissors, so the fabric won’t get all fluffy on the side of the fabric
You need to get the beeswax.
You can choose the shape that you like it can be a circle or square.
An iron
Method:
Dry and watch the fabric then iron the fabric.
Cut the fabric with the special scissors into the shape that you like.
Dip the shape of your fabric in and let the external wax drip off then lay them on a tray.
Bake in a low oven for 2-3 minutes.
Remove from the oven and when it is cool enough to pick uphold it by the very edges then gently flap the entry flap the want all the wax is probably room Asperger.
Lay the beeswax wraps to start the drying process for an hour.
Care instructions:
The beeswax wraps can handle a light scrub with a gentle dishcloth or sponge. Hand Wash your beeswax with cold water and alcohol-free soap. Put a bit of cold water in your sink and add soap. Don’t let it soak for a period of time. Dry your freshly washed wrap with a towel for immediate use or place over a dish rack.
To wash the beeswax wrap you wipe the food what was on it first,  then wash the wrap with cold water and dry it with a cloth gently.
 Enjoy making beeswax wraps

The Fire Goes Out

                                                                   By Katelyn.M
Once upon a time, there was a girl called Molly. She was sitting by a fire in her house that her mum and dad had put on. Then suddenly the fire went out, she didn’t know what to do so she asked her parents they said to get a jumper on and get some wood from the outside shed.
So that's what she did, she looked but there was no more wood in the shed. She saw a boy (which was her neighbour)and the boy was carrying lots of wood. Molly said “hi Max” (Max was his name) “Can I have some of your wood please” said Molly.
Max said “sure.” And Max and Molly just smiled and walked away. When Molly got the wood she asked her parents if they can put on the fire again. Molly told her parents that she got some wood from Max. after that her parents sat with her by the fire.
The End.

What I have done today in Manu so far

Today is the cross country for the senior kids that had a short amount a timing in the senior school cross country and sadly I didn't make it because of my timing. My teacher is not here today because she is learning different things you can do on a Chromebook. So today Me, Meka, Slade and sometimes Quaid, because he won the cross country, are in Manu because we still need a teacher to watch us. people out the window are putting concrete onto a spot that has not much concrete in it. all of the junior kids and some senior kids came outside to watch the people pouring the concrete. At first, it was cool and then after 20 minutes it got boring so some of the kids started going back inside. some kids are little so they had to get the chairs and stand on them. And now there are only like seven or more or less kids out there still. This morning in Manu Pepeke came into Manu and did some marching, yoga and put a bean bag on your foot and though it up and try to catch it. After that me and my friend Meka we asked the teacher if we could do some literacy medals and maths medals. So we finished our maths quiz. The maths quiz I am talking about is under this writing if you want to check it out. We are going to do some more stuff today but I don't know what so this is all I am going to write for now.

Tips and tricks for a litter free lunchbox

WALT: help our families and other's useless waste in our lunchboxes.

We did this activity to help our families and others to find other ways to use less plastic and wrappers in our lunches. Did you know that Paroa is an Enviroschool and we are trying to get the bronze medal and start making the environment a better place. We found LOTS of ways to have a litter free lunchbox.
I can't wait to try making my own muesli bars!!!
From this activity, I really enjoyed learning about how you can have a litter free lunchbox.
Working as a team is helpful and sometimes hard because we have different brains about what we want.
I am really happy that I am sharing ideas to help others litter free
As a class, we talked and researched ways to use less plastic.
I found it challenging when I was trying to find helpful tips and tricks. I also found it challenging when I was working as a team.

Recycling for Homework

Please don’t litter!!!

Why you should not litter: If you litter the rubbish can easily just go in the sea and kill sharks, turtles, whales and lots of other animals.

Did you know when you put something in the recycling bin some stuff can be turned into something else?

What can you recycle: You can recycle paper, metal and plastic bottles.

The metal, paper and bottles get their own piles. Some metal goes to a special factory so it can get crushed and then squashed together from other recycling bins. Then chopped into little pieces. After that, those pieces are melted in a big hot oven and then poured into blocks. The blocks are then sent to other factories because the factories can make other things with the metal. Some metal that you throw away in the recycling bin they don’t go to the dump there become something new like a new metal can or a new roll of foil or even part of a bike and car.

Some old plastic milk jug can be turned into something different too. It is taking to a special factory where it makes the plastic get shredded to bits and melted into a really hot oven and makes little pellets. Factories take the pellets and make them into new things like clothing, carpet and lots more.
But the paper is a little bit different from plastic and metal. Some paper goes to a recycling centre so it can get mixed with other paper in lots of water. Then it gets all goopy so it is smashed together by two big rollers and the rollers turn the goop into big flat pieces. The pieces are then left to dry. After that, they’re then cut into sheets of paper so we can write on them or do art, all sort of things.

So ALWAYS recycle metal, plastic bottles and paper so our environment is BTB.

BTB stands for Better Than Before.

Environment homework.

My class has homework about the Environment because we are an Enviroschool. This slide is about recycling. It is very important to recycle because if you just leave your rubbish around the animals will die and you don't want that to happen do you because imagine that you are an animal that at rubbish and then died. This slide will tell some stuff you might have not known.

A Obstacle in my life

Today for writing we looked at obstacles what has happened in our lives.

Environment for Blog X post

Environment

At my school we are an Enviroschool. If you don't know what an Enviroschool is don't worry you will soon find out because I will tell you. It is a school who cares about the environment and trying to stop all of the plastic going into the sea and our environment and if it goes in the ocean or our environment the animals eat the plastic and then the animals sadly pas away. So join us, and make our environment better. I know we can do it. At my school we made a school map about our school and put rubbish bins on the map about where all of the rubbish bins are. We also looked around our school with a list of all of the waste what was in our school and we ended up with 307 pieces of waste. We were shocked about how much waste was on our school grounds. We are trying to just recycle and compost and not just put it in any bin. We got rid of some of the bins last year because we are only going to use the recycling bin and the compost bin, so we can help the environment.

Compost for homework.

Please don’t litter!!!

Why you should not litter: If you letter the rubbish can easily just go into the sea and kill sharks,            turtles, whales and lots of other animals.
Did you know that you can put yucky old kitchen scrap foods can into the compost bin.
What is Compost: Compost is when you can grow flowers, fruit and vegetables.
How: Some decomposers turn the scrap food into compost. I know it does sound like a horrible job but they love it, And it is good they love it because we need the food. The food also does not come with plastic on it, so that means you are also not using plastic.
What can your compost bin be made out of: Your compost bin can be made out of wood, metal and plastic but I think you should not use the plastic. You want the compost bin to have holes so it does not smell and the bugs can get air to breathe like us humans.

This is my Anzac wreath for Anzac day.

Today we made an Anzac wreath to celebrate Anzac day. This is how you make an Anzac wreath.

Step 1. Colour in the poppies and the leaves also the big poppy.

Step 2.  Glue the As to the other side of the paper. Make sure you can't see any As.

Step 3. Glue the B on the other side and make sure you can't see the B.

Step 4. Get the big poppy and find the C to glue the big poppy on the C so you don't see the C.

This is what the results should look like, but it might be different colours than mine.

This is our Anzac poem for Anzac day.

Today we made a poem for Anzac day. We made this because we respect the people who were in the war. We all hope this year on Anzac day is going to be the best and remember all of the people who were brave enough and went in the war.
